Homemade Puffy Paint

Marbles Rings

Use everyday ingredients to create puffy paint that will add texture to your paintings.

What You Need:

  • White Elmer’s glue
  • Shaving cream
  • Food coloring
  • Paper
  • Paintbrush

What You Do:

  1. Pour white glue into a bowl (start with 1-2 cups).
  2. Mix in an equal amount of shaving cream.
  3. Add in food coloring.
  4. Mix together.
  5. Paint a masterpiece.
  6. Let dry.

Did You Know?

When glue dries it changes from a liquid to a solid.

By adding the shaving cream to the glue, you are changing the chemical makeup of the product and causing it to expand as it dries.

Words to Use:

  • Liquid: A substance that is not a solid or a gas.
  • Solid: Hard or firm, with a fixed shape, and not a liquid or gas.
  • Expand: To become larger in size, number, or amount, or to make something become larger.
  • Texture: The way a surface or material feels when you touch it, especially how smooth or rough it is.

What to Talk About:

  • How do the colors change when two colors are mixed?
  • What colors can you make by mixing yellow and blue? Yellow and red? Red and blue?  What about yellow and green?  What other colors can you make?
  • How something feels is known as the texture of the object. What does the painting feel like before it dries?  How does it feel after it dries?

Change It Up:

Paint portraits of your family members.

Play “Pass and Paint” with your family or friends. Give each person a different color of paint. Each person begins a painting. Set a timer for 2-3 minutes. When the time is up, pass the painting to your right. Set the timer again and paint on the painting that has been passed to you. Continue passing and painting until the painting returns to its original owner or continue passing for multiple rounds. Discuss how it felt to collaborate in the painting process.
