Create your own museum at home.  Invite your family for a visit.  Take them on a tour.

What You Need: 

  • Plush or plastic animals 
  • Natural materials, like rocks or shells 
  • Artwork you’ve created or works by famous artists
  • Family heirlooms 
  • Photographs

What You Do:

  1. Set up a museum in your house with different exhibits. 
  • Natural Science Exhibit:
    •  Display plush or plastic animals.  Create informational panels about each animal.  Group animals by where they come from.  Include a map. 
    • Display rocks and shells.  Create informational panels that provide information about each rock or shell. 
  • Art Exhibit: 
    • Display your own artwork or works by famous artists.  Create informational panels that explain each piece of art along with facts about the artist. 
  • History Exhibit: 
    • Display family photographs and heirlooms.  Create informational panels that tell the story of each artifact and photo. 

Words to Use: 

  • Natural history: The study of plants, animals, and minerals. 
  • Heirloom: A valuable object that has been owned by a family for many years and that is passed from the older members to the younger members. 
  • Curate: To choose and organize the art, music, objects for an exhibition, show, or concert. 
  • Docent: Someone who guides visitors through a museum or historic site. 

What to Talk About: 

  • Ask open-ended questions as you tour the museum.  Invite your docent to tell you more. 
  • Share your own experiences connected to each exhibit. 
  • Brainstorm additional exhibits or exhibit components to add to the museum. 

Change It Up:  

  • Make and “sell” tickets to the museum. 
  • Create a museum map. 
  • Create and deliver an interactive museum program—in-person or online. 
  • Have your visitors complete a museum survey after they visit sharing what they learned and enjoyed.
