Show someone you care by creating a one-of-a-kind card that pops up when opened. Create pop-up flower gardens, hearts, rocket ships and more.
What You Need:
- Construction paper or cardstock
- Markers or crayons
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Glue or glue stick
What You Do:
- Fold 2 pieces of thick paper in half. Set one aside until step #6.
- On one piece of your folded paper, cut 2 slits at the center of the folded side of your card about ½” apart from each other.
- Open the paper and fold tabs in the opposite direction, away from the fold.
- On a separate sheet of paper, draw a design that will pop up when the card is opened (like the heart in the photo).
- Glue the design to the tab.
- Glue the uncut paper to the back of the card. Write a message and add more designs.
Words to Use:
- Design: Plan for creating something.
- Two-dimensional: Flat.
- Three-dimensional: Having or seeming to have length, depth, and height. Not flat.
- Recipient: someone who receives something.
Questions to Ask:
- What message to do you want to communicate to the person that you are creating this card for?
- What kinds of things does the recipient enjoy? Have one of these things be what pops up on the card.
- What happens when the card is opened? Why/how?
- How do you think ____________ will feel when they receive the card?
- How do you think you will feel when you give the card to __________________?
Change It Up:
- Age it Down: Trace your kid’s hands and cut them out. Glue them to a ribbon to create a “hug” card. Write a message on the hands and then pop in the mail to send a hug to a loved one or teacher.
- Age it Up: Use bubble letters or block letters to write your message. Create several pop-up elements on one card, like multiple flowers that pop up to create a garden.
