(6pm screening; 7pm dinner & workshop)
Educators, join us for a FREE preview of Backyard Wilderness 3D, followed by dinner and two speakers...
Rob Dunn, a professor of applied ecology at NCSU, and Magdalena Sorger, a post-doc student at NCSU with a fascination and passion for ants, will briefly present on their research, citizen science projects and K-8 activities for educators. Both researchers work on behalf of the Rob Dunn Lab Group, aiming to tell the stories of the many small species humans interact with every day – on our bodies, under our beds, in our backyards. Among other takeaways, we'll learn how to find and identify arthropods in our homes, about the amazing world of ants and even how to discover our own personal spirit ants!
Please note: This evening is for educators only; no children please.
Backyard Wilderness will surprise and entertain viewers with the unexpected wonders of nature that are right under our noses—in our own backyards. Spanning a seasonal year around a suburban home, the film displays a stunning array of unique wildlife images and behavior—all captured by cameras mounted inside dens and nests, and moving along the forest floor and pond bottom, to reveal its inhabitants in rare and breathtaking intimacy. The film reminds us that Wi-Fi is not the only connection that matters and that sometimes in ordinary places, you can uncover extraordinary things that can transform you forever—you just need to step outside.
