April 18, 2011 - Raleigh, N.C. (April 18, 2011) Marbles Kids Museum is planting a 22-foot tall giant flower that's powered by the sun. POWER FLOWER, a new solar exhibit sponsored by Progress Energy, will open in the Museums Castaway Cove Kids Garden on Earth Day, Friday, April 22. Kids experiment with the flower to see how solar energy makes its petals move. Marbles worked with ClearScapes to design POWER FLOWER in partnership with Southern Energy Management, who provided the solar design, engineering and installation. All of the partnering companies are based in the Triangle.

POWER FLOWER offers an innovative, hands-on approach to learning about renewable energy resources, said Lloyd Yates, president and CEO of Progress Energy Carolinas. Child-size Pet Hospital Opens at Marbles Kids Museum to Educate Little Pet Lovers

March 8, 2011 -
Raleigh, N.C. (March 8, 2011)Banfield Pet Hospital is partnering with Marbles Kids Museum to create an exhibit celebrating the health and wellness of pets. Opening Saturday, March 19, the new pet hospital will feature exam tables, kennels and real veterinary tools. In the exhibit, children and their parents will be able to check vital signs of pets (stuffed animals), review X-rays, dress up in doctor coats and even take their four-legged friends on a walk in the museum.

Many children dream of becoming a veterinarian when they grow up. In order give children the experience of being a pet doctor, we decided to partner with Marbles Kids Museum to create an interactive pet hospital that teaches the fundamentals of pet care from a veterinarians perspective, said Karen Johnson, DVM, client advocate for Banfield Pet Hospital. Children are never too young to learn about responsible pet ownership and proper preventive care for pets. This exhibit provides hands-on learning opportunities for children to use their imagination to love and care for pets just like real veterinarians do every day.

Opening day of Pet Vet will feature a Banfield veterinarian hosting a FutureVet presentation at 10 a.m. FutureVet was developed by Banfield to help encourage children and young adults to pursue careers in pet health and medicine. During this presentation, children will have the opportunity to meet a therapy dog from the Delta Society and engage in a Question and Answer period about pets, the role of a veterinarian as well as learn about caring for their own pets.

We are so excited to have a pet hospital in the Museum. Its a terrific way for kids to become the doctor and take on the role of caregiver, said Sally Edwards, President of Marbles Kids Museum. An exhibit like this encourages children to practice compassion and nurturing while thoughtfully caring about othersall through their love of pets.
Opening day will also include a ribbon cutting ceremony, pet-themed face painting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a Howl and Meow Contest with prizes as well as celebratory milk and cupcake social, supplied by locally renowned bakery, The Cupcake Shoppe. Museum guests are encouraged to bring unopened dog and cat food on opening day to benefit the SPCA of Wake County.

About Marbles Kids Museum
Marbles provides extraordinary experiences for both children and adults through innovative hands-on childrens exhibits, creative programs and events, and larger-than-life IMAX films on North Carolinas only giant screen. Located in downtown Raleigh, Marbles offers playful learning adventures for children and families, museum and IMAX field trips, summer camps, family events, targeted outreach programs and exceptional spaces for meetings and parties.

About Banfield Pet Hospital
Founded in Portland, Ore., in 1955, Banfield has become the largest general veterinary practice in the world, with more than 770 hospitals in neighborhoods across the United States. Held at the museum and hosted by North Carolina Symphony musicians and staff members as part of its NCS Kids program, Music Makers is a family-friendly exploration of music and performance that will be held one Saturday a month.

The first Music Makers event, titled Jingle Bells, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Learning about the melodies and music that have come to define the holiday season, kids will listen to, play and make things that jingle, jangle and ring.

We involve the community in creating fun and fantastic child-led experiences, says Sally Edwards, Marbles Kids Museum President. Our collaboration with the North Carolina Symphony helps us to provide an energetic and innovative learning environment for kids to create and innovate.

Getting kids involved in live music is the foundation, the first thing we can and must do, says North Carolina Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn, who has personally conducted more than 36 free concerts for school children throughout the state since he took over at the Symphony in 2004. Kids can download until the cows come home and plug their ears into iPods, but they will never get this experience with these electronic gadgets.

Continuing throughout the year, Music Makers offers parents and educators a new avenue to present the arts to their kids in a fun, satisfying and cost-effective way. As part of their day inside Marbles Kids Museum, children will explore the science of sound and history of music, enjoy hands-on crafts and activities, meet North Carolina Symphony musicians and play musical instruments.

Future Music Makers events will be centered around specific themes, including instrument families such as the percussion or woodwind sections; the lives of the great composers; and Peter and the Wolf, one of the all-time best introductions to music for any child, which the Symphony is performing as part of its NCS Kids Young Peoples Concerts at Meymandi Concert Hall on Saturday, March 12.

Regular admission to Marbles Kids Museum is only $5. It is located at 201 E. Hargett St. in downtown Raleigh. Spend Some, Share Some, Save Some

April 2, 2009 -
Raleigh, NC (4/2/09) Benjamin Franklin coined the saying, A penny saved is a penny earned. Marbles Kids Museum and the North Carolina Bankers Association (NCBA) believe there is a lot to learn from this simple phrase. Coinciding with National Financial Literacy Month, the two organizations are kicking off their partnership to develop fun ways to provide such learning through a new permanent museum gallery focused on this very timely topic. The gallery is set to open January 2010, underwritten by a grant from the NCBA.

The NCBA believes strongly that educating young children about how money works can build healthy financial behaviors that last a lifetime. Given the factors underlying todays economic downturn, nurturing healthy money habits seems more important than ever, said Thad Woodard, NCBA President and CEO. Engaging youngsters in purposeful play and discovery at Marbles Kids Museum will play a key role in our efforts to develop financial literacy skills for the next generation.

The new gallery will also help open lines of communication about money between kids and parents, an important first step in creating positive behavior yet often a difficult subject for parents to talk about, said Sally Edwards, president of Marbles Kids Museum. A preliminary gallery plan developed by museum staff, NCBA members and elementary educators includes exhibits that focus on concepts such as needs versus wants, spending versus saving and how money grows just like you.

Students from across the state visit Marbles Kids Museum for interactive field trips that complement classroom learning. The new gallery will build on financial literacy concepts taught from kindergarten through fifth grade. Pre- and post-field trip activities will help students get the most out of their museum visit, and teachers and parents will be able to access additional activities and resources online.

About Marbles Kids Museum
Marbles Kids Museum isa hands-on,minds-onmuseum that inspires imagination, discovery and learning through extraordinary adventures and larger-than-life IMAX experiences. A Vision for the Future of Raleigh from a Kid's Perspective

April 22, 2008 -
Raleigh, NC (4/22/08) On May 3, 2008 the doors of Marbles Kids Museum will open heralding the first Kids CityPlanning Raleigh 2030. Hosted by the Museum and the Citys Department of City Planning, Kids City is an interactive city planning event for both children and adults. Throughout the day, kids 10 and under will use recycled boxes, construction paper, string, tape, crayons, markers and other creative tools to construct their ideal city on a grid that winds through the museums first floor.

Kids will put their imagination to work when they go from applying for a permit and interacting with geographic information systems to designing and creating their buildings. The city grid will include streets and other transit corridors, greenways and zoned downtown, suburbs, small towns, and farmland. Over the course of the day, the city will grow from a small 18th century planned capital city to a 21st century metro area that encompasses the outlying area.

The City of Raleigh currently is updating its Comprehensive Plan. Since 1989, when the last Plan was adopted, Raleigh has seen tremendous growth and change. Over the next 20 years, the city is expected to grow by 70 percent and reach a population of 700,000. Kids City is one element of the Citys strategy to educate people on the issues and engage them in envisioning Raleighs future. The public has expressed its desire to create and shape a great city that is founded on economic competitiveness, quality of life, sustainability and environmental stewardship. Staff from The Childrens Museum of Boston and the Capital Childrens Museum in Washington, D.C., along with educators and Japanese experts, designed this special exhibit. Marbles Kids Museum is the last stop for this exhibit that has toured the country since early 2004. The exhibit will be open through June 29, 2008.

About the Exhibit
As part of a the Asian Exhibit Initiative funded by the Freeman Foundation and administered by the Association of Childrens Museums, the exhibit advances understanding and appreciation of Asian culture with true stories and real objects straight from Japan. Intended to entertain and educate the young and old, Five Friends highlights similarities and differences between Japan and the U.S. and replaces misguided stereotypes about Asian lifestyles with authentic vignettes.

The excitement begins at the center of the 1,800-square foot exhibition space where visitors enter through a classroom where they meet five Japanese students, the main characters of the exhibit. From there, visitors are invited home to learn more about the students interests, families and neighborhoods. The central exhibit structure is furnished like a Japanese school and five living spaces around it are furnished like the students homes. Interpretive exhibits in the classroom tell us much about the school life of Japanese children, while the more personal home environments reveal the economic and social diversity of the Japanese population.

The exhibit is part of a nationwide initiative sponsored by the Freeman Foundation to promote programs about Asian cultures in Americas childrens museums.
