Marbles Kids Museum & Architects’ Can-Do Spirit Feeds the Hungry

Canstruction 2010 Donates to the Hungry, Raises Awareness

January 18, 2010

Raleigh, NC (1.18.10) — Five teams of local architects, designers and engineers took over Marbles Kids Museum on Saturday to create structures built for feeding, not housing. Instead of bricks, the teams used cans of food for Canstruction 2010, a national competition established by the Society for Design Administration. Making its 11th appearance in Raleigh at Marbles Kids Museum, Canstruction 2010, benefiting the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, opens today and runs through February 14. This year’s local theme is “Cartoon Heroes”, encouraging teams to display the can-do spirit of familiar do-gooders of the cartoon world.

A jury of design and culinary experts will judge the structures on Tuesday evening, January 19, naming the Jurors’ Favorite, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal and Structural Ingenuity. Awards will be given at the “Can Opener” celebration on Saturday, January 23.

All food used in building the amazing structures will be donated to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. During opening weekend, January 23-24, visitors receive one free admission to the museum for every five (5) canned goods donated. Donations of canned food will be gratefully accepted throughout the run of the exhibit. Over the past 10 years, this local competition has generated more than 250,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

Local sponsors of Canstruction 2010 at Marbles Kids Museum include Accent Imaging; AIA Triangle; BBH Design, PA; Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc.; and Society for Design Administration, Raleigh Chapter
